what is steam?
Steam is VALVe's new automated content delivery system. It is a program
you download that allows you to connect to VALVE's network and receive
games (such as Counter-Strike), updates, and patches seamlessly.
Steam includes a number of features for making the way you play your games much easier:
- » Automatic Updates
» Server Browser
» Friends System for Tracking and Communicating with Other Players
» Purchase and Download New Games

Steam Server Browser
The Steam system is still under development and improvements are made
all the time. It is important to note that Steam will eventually
replace the old WON network for internet authtentication, so all
multiplayer Half-Life gamers will eventually need to make the switch to
Steam. This will not happen until all the major bugs are worked out.
The Steam network is account based. This means that in order to log on
to Steam you need an account. Once you have an account you can purchase
a "subscription" to a game, which for most games will be a one time
fee; most likely equal (or cheaper) to the retail fee. Once you are
subscribed to a game you may download, install, and play it from any PC
that has Steam and allows you to log on to your Steam account.
At this time only Half-Life content (including Counter-Strike) is
avaiable through Steam, and in order to play you must own a copy of any
Half-Life game. Examples of a Half-Life game include Half-Life,
Half-Life Opp Force/Blueshift, HL: Counter-Strike, Half-Life Platinum
Pack, etc etc. These all come with a VALVe Product Key (CD-Key) which authorizes your Steam account access to all Half-Life content.
